Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders
Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders In The Wildlife Garden
Grey Squirrels do what comes natural to them. They are so good at it that an industry has been built around their lifestyle habits.
Squirrel proof bird feeders are one of the many products designed, produced and supplied to try and stop Squirrels poaching the food we provide for birds.
Is There Such A Thing As A Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder?
I would say it depends on who you ask and the particular squirrel your dealing with. A few years ago a documentary showed a Squirrel being filmed as it successfully out manoeuvred various obstacles put in it's way on a washing line.
All of this carried out to the Mission Impossible theme tune! It was hilarious to watch while at the same time proving beyond doubt just how clever Squirrels can be.
We humans have endeavored to be just as creative in the design of the many types of Squirrel proof bird feeders produced and equally inventive in the methods employed to deter squirrels from having an easy meal at our expense.
Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders Used To Deter Squirrels
Three different mechanical methods that are available:
(1) SPIN them (2) SHOCK them (3) STOP them at the door.
Each of these use the weight of the Squirrel to activate
the method used to stop them.
With the first mentioned above they are spun off the feeder
when their weight triggers a protective bar to rotate and
throws the Squirrel off the feeder.
With the other it receives a mild shock, which they don't like, causing them to depart rapidly and after experiencing this a
few times, it is claimed they don't return.
The third option is generally a metal bird feeder that is designed
to close the feeder so that the Squirrel cannot get to the food.
Simple but effective! As birds are a lot lighter than
Squirrels they are not affected by these deterrents.
Some Use Squirrel Repellent
There is also an organic squirrel repellent in powder form on the market that triggers fear in the Squirrel so that it tends to avoid
the area from then on.
The choice of electronic devices that act as a squirrel repellent available to us is wide and varied while keeping within the budget of most us.
As mentioned earlier, we have created a substantial industry to meet the challenge the humble yet persistent Squirrel has presented us with.
We each know how we feel about Grey Squirrels, which is often determined by how much trouble they cause in our gardens or property.
My wife's parents, although often entertained by the squirrels
that come from the woods that back onto their garden, do find
it frustrating when the squirrels scrump apples from their small apple tree and then just take a small bite from it leaving the rest
on the ground.
By Autumn their supply of tasty apples has diminished considerably!
Many Use A Squirrel Feeder
Another Simple but ever more popular strategy is to put up a dedicated squirrel feeder. The theory is to use what comes natural to the Squirrel to deter them from raiding bird feeders.
By providing food that appeals to the Squirrel we distract them from the bird feeders in our garden. Also being territorial creatures Squirrels tend to stick to a good food source when they find one,
as proven with their regular visits to the feeders in our gardens.
The thinking behind this seems to be - If you can't beat them, make a friend of them! To help cultivate this viewpoint some
have highlighted the positives in having Squirrels around.
One being, because they bury their surplus food and then don't go back for it, many a tree is now growing where it might not have.
There are many books advocating this approach.
Some Local Authorities give advice because of the problems caused by Squirrels in their area. As a precaution it's worth checking this advice along with any local Bye Laws regarding feeding Squirrels.
Whatever method we decide to use it's good to keep in mind that the Grey Squirrel is just doing what is natural to it and we shouldn't take it personal when it outwits us so .... so many times!
