Organic Compost Tips

Make Organic Compost For Your Garden

To make fertile organic compost we need to provide food, water and shelter to micro-organisms. These do all the work by basically eating and excreting the materials in an organic compost heap.

These micro-organisms need food that's carbon rich, some water and shelter from extremes of wet or dry weather, then given enough time and some help from us they get to work and heat up and break up the garden and kitchen waste so that organic compost can be produced.

A Compost Activator Can Speed Up The Process

There is an ingredient that will help speed up the process within a compost bin or heap. What needs to be included in the mix that's going to be composted is a compost activator, these trigger the process that decomposes the material we are composting.

The herb Comfrey is an excellent activator along with any nitrogen rich material, IE chicken manure. Ready made compost activators can be purchased to add to the mix when preparing a batch of garden compost, these usually provide helpful advice and hints in getting the best out of the product.

Quick Return Garden Compost Making

There is a book that explains what is described as Quick Return compost making, the process explained was devised by a founder member of The Soil Association named Maye.E.Bruce.

This gives a list of plants that when mixed together provide a compost activator that is highly praised. Ready mixed packets can be purchased and a small amount is added to the materials we want to mix.

Garden Composting Equipment

Once we've made our mind up to make our own garden compost we will need to decide whether
to buy what composting equipment we will need or make our own. Home made compost bins are usually made from wood and pallets prove useful if we take this route.

Before we purchase a composter it's worthwhile working out how much waste material we can produce to keep it and it's micro-organisms busy. In many ways it would be better to get a smaller one then if we outgrow it we can either upgrade or get another smaller one.

The easier we make garden composting for ourselves the better, we are then more likely to keep up with it and reap the benefits, so it's worth considering models that make mixing easier by being able to rotate them.

Garden Composting Summed Up

It's simple really, choose the best composting equipment for us and our size garden, have enough garden and kitchen material to hand, even if we have to ask the neighbors for some of theirs.

Make sure there is a compost activator included in the mix, add water as required and provide shelter from extremely dry or wet weather. Then the micro-organisms, the bacteria, will get to work and produce fertile organic compost for the areas of your wildlife
garden that you can make good use of this amazing substance.
