Garden pond plants can transform a body of stagnant smelly water into a healthy habitat for aquatic wildlife, hence they play a vital role in a pond.

There are four basic types of garden pond plants to choose from and each group has a wide variety of plants to choose from. So we can create a wildlife habitat that we like as well as one that local wildlife will enjoy.

Why Install Garden Ponds?

The more garden ponds there are the better it is for a wide range of local wildlife.

A garden pond is a relatively safe haven for the creatures that inhabit it as well as for those that make regular visits for a drink or if possible a quick bath.

When there are several garden ponds in the locality this creates a corridor for amphibians and insects a like. Birds also benefit, especially during nesting periods.

It is a very satisfying thing to achieve so much good for local wildlife simply by having a pond, small or large in our gardens.

As with ponds a bog garden will be a natural magnet to a variety of wildlife.

Bog plants will complement whatever pond plants we have and in many ways will broaden the variety we can put to use in our garden as a whole.

We should not be daunted by the idea of a bog garden as it is a relatively simple procedure to creating this habitat which will add a new dimension to the garden.

If you have a pond then definitely consider a bog garden.

Creating A Shade Garden

The decision to have a shade garden may be forced upon us because of the situation of our garden and surrounding cover, whether this be because of buildings, hedges or trees.

We can be successful with shade gardening simply by making sure we choose shade loving plants to plant out in our shade garden. Shade garden plants are generally plants that would be quite at home in a woodland garden. The diversity of these plants gives considerable scope for creating a colorful shade garden.

We may surprise our self with the array of plants we can make use of in a shaded area of our garden. A shade garden is another opportunity to provide needed habitat for local wildlife.

Homemade Bird Feeders

Homemade bird feeders do not have to be expensive or elaborate. There is the approach of using our imagination and letting nature provide the feeders for us.

Think like a bird, feed like a bird, you are a bird. I've got an image of Micheal Caine in my mind, if you are wondering why, the film "Miss Congeniality" will provide the answer. It's a favorite of my wife.

Here are two examples of what I mean.
Picture

With this one we just push
Fat Balls into the ends of the
cut off branch's and this gets
regular visits from smaller
birds like Robins and larger
birds such as Wood Pigeons.

Our second example
we've simply screwed
a square feeder to a
log and once again this
receives lots of diners.
I have to admit that these were the most easy to make bird feeders we've set up in our garden and are equally as effective as any we've bought. And in some cases more so.

So are Homemade Bird Feeders worth It?

We would say YES! They are definitely worth considering especially if we have the time, materials, a few basic tools and some DIY skills. And if we do have a go we may surprise ourselves and soon be making good use of them and reaping the rewards.
